Notes
-
Kate had 4 children by her first husband James Rudd. They were James March, Caroline Ada, Alice and Edward. She also had two other children born out of wedlock, Walter Bell March (later known as Walter Bell Rudd), 4 years prior to her first marriage to James and Charles John 16 months after the death of her first husband James.
Although no farther's name is recorded on his birth certificate it is reasonable to assume that Walter Bell's father was James Rudd as Bell is a unique first name and James had a brother named Bell.
Kate fell on hard times during the 1890s following the death of her husband James, aged 30, on 27th January 1890 and six weeks later on 9th March 1890 the death of her father-in-law also named James Rudd. Kate was the informant of both deaths. Following the death of her husband James she, her daughter Alice and son Charles became inmates at the Depwade Union Workhouse in Pulham Market. Kate was discharged at her own request along with Charles on 25th October 1900. This was shortly before the marriage to her second husband Thomas Johnson. Her daughter Alice remained in the Workhouse and was listed as an imbecile in the 1901 census. Her second husband, Thomas Johnson, was listed in the 1901 census as a tailor at the workhouse although Kate and Thomas were not resident there at the time. They occupied a 4 bedroomed house in Pulham market. Although admission and discharge records after 1901 are not available for inspection the Vaccination record of June 1902 lists Kate and Thomas as residents. The vacination record of 1st February 1928 shows that Alice was still resident in the Workhouse at that time.
In 1900 Kate had five surviving children, Walter Bell who moved to London to live with his aunt and uncle, Bessie and Walter Reading, James who also moved to London, Sam who moved to Stowmarket as a hairdressers assistant and Alice and Charles who were with her in the Workhouse.
Kate moved to Cambridge with her second husband Thomas Johnson and youngest son Charles John in the early 1900s. She died in 1940 and was blind at the time.
